Wow, so this has been exactly what I've been experiencing and trying to find a solution around for about the past year or so - before the arrival of the MP25, anyway.
Got a bit of info/experience to share, here, which will hopefully help people out... but it's a bit of a story, so grab a sandwich... @ DJ Majestic: Couldn't agree more with you. Old Mojo is still pumpin', and no reason to change a good thing in form, just maybe add some function: so (like say) about a year ago I started a crazy voyage to try to 'find a way' to 'digitize' the MM8z. I searched forums, talked with electrician friends and contacts, even started drilling down into diagrams of related equipment. At the start, even all that proved fruitless as the main need was for a truly digitized fader, and so (at the time) I, too, even considered buying and ripping into the very Kontrol mentioned in this thread; envisioning (if necessary) somehow physically strapping one of the channel faders to a modified version of a CF and hidden under the face plate. (With spit and chewing gum, if I had to.) BUT... before committing to such measures, I happened upon a group of innoFader supporters in another set of forums. (Mods, not here to sell anything, just explaining an experience to help out other, ardent Rane/Serato supporters, and a possible component solution to keep it all going - apologies in advance for any toe-stepping. Wouldn't trade my Rane for anything. ...obviously) So, I was reading on in said forums and came across a couple of experimenters trying to solve a somewhat similar problem - they were trying to upgrade an entry level mixer (still digital capable, just not from the main CF) to give it an extra digital triggering capability from the cross fader. 'Huh, pretty close' I thought, 'but worth it?' Well, it didn't matter. They went for it, and they pulled it off. Within a week they had this little... Behringer controlling the software, and believe me, more than a few heads turned. Eureka? ...not quite. Flash forward to more forum searching and a brief correspondence with owner/engineer E.M. later, and I was getting more info than I could handle (literally ...I'm no engineer). Make no mistake, the innoFader series of products work, and work well. But it turns out that (maybe obvious to most) they weren't exactly designed for the purpose(s) outlined by the forum experimenter(s), much less those in my emails to Mr. M, or in this post. (Intrepid tinkerers be warned.) 'But could they be mod-ed to do the job?' I kept thinking. My original, summarized question(s) to [company] went like this: (paraphrased) 'Although the Behringer mixer-mod in question was performed on a digital mixer, I was wondering if an [company] product might be available for my particular analog mixer (Rane 'Mojo', MM8Z), which would allow me to control MIDI triggering, and allow me to (whether through a self-mod to the backplate with a MIDI or USB out port addition, or via an external MIDI controller hookup via an extension cable from the relevant, internal [company] product/board) connect to and control a product like Video-SL.' Without an exact solution, and having to deal with a layman, I'm sure even Mr. M was at a loss. He did seem interested, however: 'Your best bet is to do the following: 1) Figure out a way you can wire the innoFader to a mixer to get a 0 to 5 volt VCA output 2) hook up this output to take the place of a trim pot on a cheap MIDI controller Other than that you are talking about a serious project for a hobbyist... I wish you the best of luck.' And so, these last suggestions seem to fit a combination of original ideas on the subject and will likely be the road (we) go down: Since this last reply, I've had sit-downs with a couple of the electrical wizards, and - though he was/is obviously right about the beyond-hobbyist-level of knowledge required - it's actually looking more and more hopeful. I've been able to get my head around some of these base concepts, myself, but fortunately I have a couple of good people on the case now, too. It turns out these things ARE extremely modular, and (outside the main boards) somewhat customizable even (potentially) outside their base design - with the right knowledge.Only reason the project isn't really finished right now has more to do with all our schedules. I hope to be in contact with someone again this week, actually, to see if he can devote some time to the remaining research/circuit-tracing part. Don't yet have an innoFader (VCA version or other) in hand with which to test. The planning is the first part in order to get the proper test-product for this cause. Alot of the pain should be taken away with simple math and paper. (Well, maybe not 'simple'.) Anyway if this goes down, could mean more fun for a few more lo-tech junkies out there than just me. And (maybe more importantly) it could mean keeping another great Rane product tuned and kicking. Again, sorry for the novel, but it seemed to fit exactly what some might be going through, so thought it valuable to share. (Wish I'd had such info when I started.) Good luck. And - though I'm bad at it - I'll try to post back with an update. (Mods permitting.) -Dean
